This programme uniquely equips students with the insights, knowledge, and critical skills needed for dealing with private law issues in a rapidly changing world. It provides a thorough understanding of the European and international aspects of private law, and of the economic, social and political forces driving its Europeanisation and globalization

The Amsterdam Merit Scholarship is for outstanding students who meet the following criteria:

  • An LLB degree with an average grade of 7.5 (on a scale from 1-10) and been admitted to one of the Amsterdam Law School's LLM programmes.
  • No more than five years have elapsed between obtaining the LLB degree and starting the LLM programme.
  • They have not already obtained an LLM or any other master degree at the University of Amsterdam, and have not been granted another scholarship.

The eligibility assessment will be made on the basis of an AMS motivation letter, grade point average, resume, motivation letter and letters of reference regarding your academic qualities.

The scholarship equals the amount of the tuition fee. The deadline for application is on the 1st of April.

Accommodation: The University does not provide accommodation itself, but assists students in finding it.

 

Application Process

Deadline for enrolment in September is on the 1st of April.

Enrolment in February is also possible, with a deadline of the 1st of November.

Registration is done though an online platform. In addition to that, the following documents need to be mailed to Amsterdam:

  • Printed version of the completed online application form
  • Certified copy of university transcript including grades
  • Certified copy of university diploma
  • Official copy of your TOEFL/IELTS/CE score
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Copy of your secondary school/high school diploma

 

Program structure

The program is construed of courses and the writing of a thesis, which will all amount to 60 ECTS. The mandatory courses that students need to follow are:

  • Private law in a European and international context,
  • European contract law and justice
  • European company law.

The electives for this program are Comparative law; Consumer Rights in the Digital Single Market; Human Rights in Private Law; Finance, Security and Insolvency; European Tort Law; TTIP, CETA, TISA: markets beyond the state and the politics of private law.

  

Career prospects

This Master's programme is intended for students who are interested in pursuing a career in internationally oriented law firms, in-house law departments in multinational companies around the world, European Union institutions, national public institutions, adjudication bodies and academic research.
