The Human Rights Essay Award is an annual competition sponsored by the Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, seeking to stimulate the production of scholarly work in international human rights law. The topic for 2017 is: Emerging Challenges in the Relationship between International Humanitarian Law and International Human Rights Laws. Participants can choose to write about any topic related to this theme, as long as their essay is a legal article.

Two awards will be granted one for the best article in English and one for the best in Spanish. Winners will be given a full scholarship to the Programme of Advanced Studies on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law for either the Diploma or Certificate of Attendance options. Travel expenses, housing and living expenses will also be covered. They also have the opportunity to publish their articles in the American University International Law Review.

Who?

The competition is open to law graduates with a demonstrated interest in the field of international human rights law.

How?

Submit your essay of no more than 35 pages (including footnotes) in Word format through the online submission page, attaching your CV in a separate file. The CV must demonstrate your interest in human rights law.

When?

The deadline to submit articles is February 1, 2017, at 11:59 p.m. E.S.T.
